The trailer brake indicator light should work on your truck without a trailer battery plugged in. Your trailer wiring should not have any connection to your trailer battery as it draws power from your vehicle for those functions. I spoke to my contact at Tekonsha and they said the LCD display on the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 is part of the limited lifetime warranty. Therefore, if you have an issue with the screen bleeding in from the sides then you would be covered so long as this was not attributed to a user error (ie. water damage). It sounds like the brake controller is possibly going out and would need to be replaced. You can do some troubleshooting to make sure. I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains how to troubleshoot a brake controller you can check out.

I'd ground the magnet to the trailer frame as close as possible to the magnet, but also run a ground wire from that screw to the main ground on the trailer tongue. Where the ring terminals ground to the trailer frame, make sure that there's a dime sized spot of bare metal around the hole, and use a star washer between the ring terminal and the trailer frame to bite into the metal for a good connection.
